Six Years, Three Phases, One Groundbreaking Achievement

The Tilbury Grain Terminal is now fully operational following the completion of an ambitious six-year reconstruction programme. Spearheaded by several organisations including T H WHITE Projects (THWP), this milestone marks the successful conclusion of a three-phase project that transformed the site along the Thames after two major incidents required the demolition and reconstruction of both steel and concrete silos.

As Principal Contractor for the first two phases, THWP led the replacement of the 20,000-tonne Silo 3 facility and implemented a sophisticated Transfer Reclaim System. This system facilitates the efficient transfer of grain between the terminal, the adjacent flour mills, and bulk storage facilities, while also enabling a return feed from Silo 3 to the main terminal during the reconstruction of the grain terminal’s concrete Silo block no 4.

Phase three of the project saw P J Careys appointed as the Principal & Main Contractor for Silo 4, with THWP acting in the role as the Mechanical & Electrical sub-contractor throughout its design and implementation. The result is a state-of-the-art slip-formed silo block comprising 30 storage cells, each measuring 7.3m square – a design unprecedented in the UK since the mid-1980s.

Engineering Excellence Amidst Challenges
The journey to completion presented numerous technical challenges, including intricate design considerations and an ambitious schedule within a tightly confined footprint. These challenges were met with innovative solutions and unwavering commitment from all parties involved.

“Collective teamwork and clear focus were key to overcoming the daily complexities of this project. We’re proud to have worked alongside a dedicated team of consultants, contractors, and the Port of Tilbury to deliver this modern grain storage facility,” said Andrew Workman, Head of Business Development at T H WHITE Projects.

A Modern Facility Fit for the Future
The new facility stands as a testament to cutting-edge design and construction, ensuring Tilbury Grain Terminal remains a vital link in the UK’s grain supply chain. Its modern systems will support efficient and sustainable operations for years to come.
