At T H WHITE Projects, we believe that the key to delivering exceptional results for our customers lies in the strength and unity of our teams. To reinforce this, our division recently embarked on a memorable team-building event—a day of rowing on the picturesque Gloucester to Sharpness Canal. Hosted by Gloucester Rowing Club at The Boathouse, this event not only brought our team closer together but also provided valuable lessons in collaboration, communication and resilience.
The Journey Begins
The day started with a scenic drive from Devizes, offering stunning views of the Severn Estuary, the Forest of Dean and the rolling hills of Wales as we descended towards Gloucester. With the weather on our side—a sunny 23 degrees and light winds—twelve members of our team arrived at the rowing club, suitably dressed for the day ahead and with plenty of enthusiasm. The air was filled with a sense of anticipation, as well as a healthy dose of competitive spirit, as everyone geared up for the challenges and rewards that lay ahead.
Learning the Ropes
Our hosts for the day, Steve and Sue, provided professional tuition, putting us through our paces on the erg rowers to master the basics of strokes and rowing patterns. Under their expert guidance, the team spent a couple of hours honing our technique and building confidence. The combination of nervous energy and adrenaline began to kick in as we prepared to take to the water and put our new skills to the test.
Before venturing onto the water, the group paired up for additional instruction on a land-based rowing machine. They practiced using the oars and learned the importance of rowing in a coordinated manner—a challenging task, especially for those who struggled to distinguish left from right!
On the Water
With the training behind us, it was time to row on the canal. Apart from a few barges and cruisers, the waterway was clear and the team launched their boats with determination. The focus, togetherness and communication we had practiced came into play as we worked in unison, pulling and propelling our boats forward. The competitive spirit was evident, as each member pushed their limits, supporting one another while striving to achieve their best.
The Relay Race
After a light lunch and sports quiz, it was time for the highlight of the day—the erg relay race. Three teams fought it out over a 1500m distance, showcasing the skills and techniques we had learned throughout the morning. The race was a true test of teamwork and the energy and camaraderie among the group were palpable. As the oars moved in perfect synchrony, it became clear that our efforts to build a cohesive team had paid off.
Awards and Recognition
The day concluded with an awards ceremony, where our hosts selected and presented prizes for a range of entertaining categories, including “Best Outfit,” “Most Competitive,” “Best Crash,” and even “Up the Creek Without a Paddle.” These light-hearted awards added to the fun and ensured that everyone left with fond memories and a few laughs. Special thanks go to Steve and Sue for their expert guidance and to Gloucester Rowing Club for their first-class facilities.
Heading Home
As the late afternoon sun began to set, our budding Olympic rowers headed back home, full of banter and shared experiences. The day was a resounding success, not just as a fun day out, but as a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we work together. There’s no doubt that some aching muscles followed, but the sense of accomplishment and the bonds forged will linger far longer.
Stronger Together
This rowing event was more than just a team-building exercise; it reflected the values we uphold in our daily work. By bringing together diverse skill sets, fostering communication, and embracing challenges, we continue to build a team that is strong, united, and focused on delivering the best possible outcomes for our customers.
Well done to everyone who attended—no longer beginners – great teamwork!
