Tilbury Grain Terminal Returns To Full Operation

by T H WHITE on December 23, 2024

Six Years, Three Phases, One Groundbreaking Achievement

The Tilbury Grain Terminal has reached an incredible milestone – it is now fully operational following the completion of an ambitious six-year, three-phase reconstruction programme. This transformative project has redefined grain storage and processing in the UK, ensuring the facility remains a vital link in the nation’s grain supply chain for years to come.

A Visionary Project in Three Phases

The journey began with the replacement of Silo 3, a 20,000-tonne facility that serves as a cornerstone of the terminal’s operations. T H WHITE Projects (THWP), acting as the Principal Contractor for the first two phases, led this ambitious rebuild. Alongside the new silo, a sophisticated Transfer Reclaim System was implemented to enable seamless and efficient grain transfer between the terminal, flour mills, and bulk storage facilities. Even during the reconstruction of Silo 4, this system ensured uninterrupted operations by providing a return feed from Silo 3 to the main terminal.

Phase three saw the creation of Silo 4, a cutting-edge slip-formed silo block comprising 30 storage cells – each measuring 7.3m square. Designed and built to meet modern demands, this facility is a landmark achievement in UK grain storage, being the first of its kind since the mid-1980s. THWP contributed as the Mechanical & Electrical sub-contractor, ensuring state-of-the-art systems were seamlessly integrated.

Overcoming Challenges with Engineering Excellence

The reconstruction of the Tilbury Grain Terminal wasn’t without its challenges. The project demanded innovative solutions to address intricate design considerations, an ambitious timeline, and a confined working environment. Thanks to the dedication, teamwork, and expertise of all involved, these challenges were met head-on.

Andrew Workman, Head of Business Development at T H WHITE Projects, reflected on the project’s success:
“Collective teamwork and clear focus were key to overcoming the daily complexities of this project. We’re proud to have worked alongside a dedicated team of consultants, contractors, and the Port of Tilbury to deliver this modern grain storage facility.”

A Facility for the Future

The result of these efforts is a world-class facility that stands as a testament to modern design, sustainable practices, and engineering ingenuity. The new Tilbury Grain Terminal is ready to meet the evolving needs of the UK’s grain industry, supporting efficient and sustainable operations long into the future.

A Heartfelt Thank You

This remarkable achievement would not have been possible without the collective efforts of all the consultants, contractors, and the Port of Tilbury. T H WHITE Projects extends its deepest gratitude to everyone involved in this engineering triumph.
